Hmmmm.... I like a couple and for different reasons... I may well picked the one I'd play if I have no choice of partners... If I could choose my "wingmen", then I'd probably choose DoL, but its probably close between DrL and DoL....

Why does nobody like the BS? Any ideas? They have a secure position and nice characters.

Cheers,

I like the BS just not as much as some other postions.

Regarding BS, its an OK nation. Yes its safe, but thats also the downside. Its a long way to go to get to a battle, and it takes a few turns and some lucky locating to get the mages up to curse power. The nation is more like a 2950 nation, a slow starter basically. By the time the BS is up to speed, the DS may either have already won or the Freeps may have opened Mordor like a soup can.

Its fun, for a change of pace. But not a top choice...MHO.

DS and Neutral choices seem to reflect players requests for set-ups, FP doesn't though - next time I see Cardolan as 2nd choice of nation for most players.... :-)

It might be that Cardolan is far from a first choice for many, but becomes a favorite after they get the chance to enjoy the position, albeit as a second or third choice. Free armies! Diplomacy with Rhudaur and the Dunlendings! An enemy at hand in the Witch-king! A stalwart ally in Arthedain! (he needs you). And a navy with which to go harry the Corsairs! -- especially if you can con the Noldo out of their ships. A relatively "safe" position (provided both the Dunlendings and Rhudaur do not choose the other side at an inconvenient time). A goodly supply of exclamation points! [!!!].

What more could one ask?

How about, no reason to become involved in the artifact hunt? None of this nonsense about contributing to a Spirit Mastery squad, or to an Agent task force? If things go well, and the game lasts, Cardolan might contribute emissaries to a coalition mission.

A fun position.

I like it.

A well played Cardolan can wreck serious havoc on Mordor come the late game with all of emissaries, armies, AND agents. And eventually, Finduilas will become capable of much more than household entertainment...

I did play with the idea of 1st and 2nd choices but it'd also then bring in the 3rd choice aspect as well. Better to make it 1st choice and then we have a pure result so to speak. Could always then make another poll for 2nd choices but thats taking things too far.

I had to go for QA - totally my favourite position. I don't know whether or not I prefer pre-aligned neutrals or a standard neutral set up. I love the diplomacy, but it's nice to get into the fray from the get go. Huge potential for development - 2 of the best SNAs (Emmies and double scouts), good climate all year round and a navy!

And I get to rejoice every time SG wastes their precious troops on Vamag :)

I suspect that there would be diferent results depending on Neutral set up.
Pre aligned spoils the QA, in my opinion.

Gotta be the CL if you like's killing and a brilliant position behind a
competent team.. Close 2nd is the DkLts, what a position but again has
to be played well to get the maximin benefit to the nation and the team..

lionatus
10th May 2006, 10:15 AM
Never really like the CL as you kinda have to play to strengths and that can get boring as doing something different can involve comprimises Im not happy with. The team daresay would feel the same.

happymadcat
10th May 2006, 10:18 AM
Yep, retire AL-Gular and Sholgic.. Name nothing but agents... Love it and
with a competent team in front of you one will get to the 70 kill mark..
Paradise! Lol

lionatus

An where's the fun in that. Having to keep multiple commanders in armies. Riding challenges and kidnap/assass as well as fending off dragons enemy armies etc... bliss. Roll on the HC

happymadcat
10th May 2006, 10:24 AM
Where's the fun? In wiping out huge Card and EO etc armies brimming with
HC and C/A's??? A few agents destroy all that hard work and investment?

Nothing better! Lol

lionatus
10th May 2006, 10:28 AM
Not mine though. 870 is such a wonderful order. Thats a hell of a lot of resource chasing down a big army. What are my teams Agents doing while you're doing that? Wiping out cap army and chars maybe? then the emmies swoop in. Letters home would have to rerouted or marked return to sender.

happymadcat
10th May 2006, 10:31 AM
Usually not, its a straight army pin and move the agents in... No probs

lionatus
10th May 2006, 10:37 AM
Have you tried pinning one of my armies??? hahahahaha, besides you'd get fed up or not have enough in the way of agents..

lionatus
10th May 2006, 10:38 AM
and I normally have 2 big armies going differing ways anyway. 2 turns is enough for someone to lose their cap.

CL is soooo boring!! Witch King is the ultimate and more challenging position. Best starting nation? Dark Lts. Most fun? Dog Lord and Long Rider.

lionatus
11th May 2006, 06:27 AM
Never like the Long Rider, doen't mean I wouldn't play it. Specially since theres a lot of starting cav. Now Dog Lord, yes you're talking my language there.

I agree CL and BS nice character game but v.boring. I like the FK myself for the army game, also predicatbe and can be boring, but dropping in behind the lines and pouring out armies can add heaps of amusement.

Yes, I like the WK nation.... max recruit, max blocking, ability to increase
all 3 MT's to cities before raising taxes to 80%, good starting cav.. If all
fails a great guerilla nation to play..

CL boring? Tut tut :p

Right on, brother. Let the others have their mages and agents - give me "hire for free" and I'll be a very happy Dark Servant.

I have to say that GB has taught me a great deal about unappreciated nations. On is the IK. Two of my GB games are ongoing, but it would be more than a little interesting to know what my opponents thought of my unconventional tactics...*grin*

Give me the "Frosty" any time...After the first 10 turns, he becomes a powerhouse capable of holding both passes into mordor without any ally help...

I must admit I enjoy Drl for the challenge of survival.. Merely finishing a game in this position is more fun than winning a game with Harad.. But for my style of Play Dog or Drk Lt's would be awesome for me.. Funny thing is I never played either of these positions.. The position I would least likely play CL ..

The Witch-King is my favorite, the Cloud Lord by far my least favorite. I've always wanted to try the Ice King but never ended up with it. I'd love to try the Dragon Lord against competant active players too, the only time I played it the Sinda were basically inactive from turn one and the Dwarf player was a newbie who lost about three big armies before he mastered the concept of 'refuse personal challenge.' Thus I didn't really get the true opposition the position usually gets and so many of them dropped or were inactive the game was over by turn ten. :(

I think people should try the Fire-King. I know before I played it I thought it the worst position on the DS, but I really enjoyed playing it. It's loads of fun and seldom boring. The characters are pretty marginal, but the nation advantages are great. You're in the midst of the action every turn, and if you're the devious sort, no hex on the board is safe from you circa turn ten if you use your imagination. You can also go up and help Er-Murazor and Khamul with their staggering orders deficit against the Freeps.

Yes I agree, now what would the EO or Dog Lord be like with Free Hire. Might just now look at tweaiking 1650 into a grudge adapted format to give everyone what they want using the FA SNA list, tailoring each to their strengths and getting rid of the SNAs that no-one really uses or needs.

EO with hire-for-free? Sign me up. Even better, Easterlings with free hire or conjure mounts. Barbarian power!
