Whats with the Balrog. Any idea of challenge rank. I mean he stomped a 110 challenge ranked mage of mine although he was left with one health. I thought these guys would have had a comparable challenge rank.

Have unconfirmed rumour that saying 'elbereth' will enable escape from Balrog thus succeeding in encounter and getting the goosied. Anyone confirm this?

Your mage was probably very lucky as Balrogs are reported to have Dragon like challenge ranks, 200+.

I kinda thought that but was led to believe demoons weren't as powerful. Have had Blarog in army before and its worth around 30-40,000 attack strength.
Any idea on the 'elbereth' reaction?

Elbereth was one of the immortal Valar, but I do not know of any good reason why a Balrog would react to the elvish name for the 'Lady of the Stars'. The only possibility is during the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age with Morgoth, the Valar destroyed many of the Balrogs? I do not know whether Elbereth took part in this war though.

I dunno always assumed this was for the Shelob encounter to get away without combat. Mind you in so saying didn't frodo have the 'light' of elbereth with him against Shelob. Haven't my copy of the trilogy to hand but I think thats true. MAybe this is a generic answer against all of the darker spawn of the Valar?

Lionatus may be right about using elbereth against generic spawn of the Dark Lord(s) - though I've not heard of anyone using this response against the Balrog. I have successfully escaped using Flee though.

Well if all else fails will keep you updated. I'm gonna fry that over-grown nasty somehow. No need to FLEE either, 2 chars just ignored it and were ok.

Ok update on Druedain in the cave encounter. 285 FLEE followed by an 900 and arty no. definately works. Confirmed twice and will confirm a 3rd time(maybe) in the next week or so.

Anyone got an answer on the Skeleton and the mirror encounter. Have unconfirmed erports but nothing concrete, and no I don't have a 120+ challenge char to go to it.

Have decided to compile in a PDF the new encounters and results of older ones as well but need your input guys.

Here is one for you (which I know you have seen) but figured I would share it with everyone else. Never seen this before:
Encounter for Lord (name removed to protect innocent) at 4331
During the night, we were visited by a monster from the deep sands and crevices. The men are still talking
in hushed whispers and are still worrying whether they will still be alive after their watch is over. It was
during the second watch that the first warning was given. The moon had been full and visibility was good for
over 200 yards. A warning shout went up as the first sentry caught sight of something speeding across the
night landscape. It stopped about 150 yards away and just seemed to be watching us. It looked like a
monstrous Mountain Troll, but it sported fierce talons on both hands and feet and it had fangs set into huge
and powerful jaws. We set up in a skirmish line in order to meet it head on, when from the massive shoulders
spread leathery wings which sprang the beast into the middle of our formation! Suddenly, it laughed a loud
laugh of fiendish horror and sprang again into the air over and over again. The scream and yells were enough
to send even the bravest cowering. Finally, with a look that promised it would leave little behin next time,
the Sand Demon Razarac sprang into the night and was gone. As I said, the men remain terrified.
This dreaded Demon did absolutely nothing to my army though....wonder if he will be back??

Lionatus, do you know if that's been tried with 900 and no arty number (or zero)? Or have you always run across it, knowing the arty for that hex?

@ Fletch
The sand demon Razarac is taken out of an old ME-RPG sourcebook by ICE, I think it was "Far Harad". If I remember correctly, Razarac was described as malicious monster which takes more delight in harrassing people than in actually killing them, what would fit into your encounter. One of his favourite delights was urinating on the supplies, so your soldiers should have a look if they got demons pee on their camel burgers ;o)

Thanks for the info. I didnt have any food anyway so no loss. Would be curious to find out if he would have destroyed any of my supplies if I had had any. Maybe next time......

Nanook, have done 3 times now. Using 900 and knowing the arty number has worked. But I must say you have to put in the 285 FLEE order for some reason. Tried the 3rd time without and never found the arty. Did it again using the 285 and 900 and got it ok.

Skeleton in the cave is kinda the same. Did 285 FLEE and 900 but nothing. Next turn same encounter but did 2 900s instead and gort arty.

In both cases I knew the arty know and location from LATs

Thanks, Lionatus. Interesting about the Flee/900 combo.
By Skeleton-in-the-cave encounter, do you mean the same one as the Mirror Cave (can touch mirror for scry)? I never knew you could find an arty there -- only heard of winning it by combat.
Can you scry and still get an arty?
lionatus
15th April 2003, 10:59 AM
Yes the big skellie's the one. No need for combat. Took 2 turns so not sure you actually need to submit the 285 order either. I did 285 FLEE and 900 arty no. Next turn 2 900s and got arty, ignored the encounter the 2nd time. So it must be based on chances of findfing at 900, bonus if you've LATd? maybe need to try but no way to be sure.
lionatus

So yes a scry and a 900 should be ok. Not tried though.

Am collating all my encounters with their descriptors. Am probably going to have to try the 'elbereth' answer on the Balrog next turn too. Will do a 900 on the arty at that location to see if this works. a flee and a 900 worked elsehwere too. Seems there is a generic neutral response to a lot of encounters.

Yes confirmed twice now. The skeleton in the cave/mirror etc encounter. You dont need to respond to this one. If you know the arty no. subsequent 900s will gain you the arty. Of course those that have challenged Id like to know what happened succesfully and failing.
