I'd look into renting or borrowing the laptop if the money is difficult to
justify. There are a lot of companies in Europe and the US that rent out for
short periods at what look like fairly reasonable rates.

On the other hand, if you bought the thing, you'd be able to resolve the PDF
font problem... :-) You might also want to consider a s/hand PowerBook.
