I am wondering about making this group moderated so that I have to allow
players to join it. It's the only way I can efficiently stop these sort of
postings. Feedback welcome and issues to discuss about this. I won't be
moderating posts from players, nor blocking anyone joining that is a
legitimate player of our games. :-)

I would be ok with a moderated group. However, the
subject postings do add a bit of humor. ;-)

Under that scenario, people like me, who aren't players, but who are
considering playing, wouldn't be here.

The membership has remained relatively stagnant for quite a while, so it wouldn't be much of a burden. Definitely Moderate if you have the time, and we'll mostly all thank you for it.

As long as you set membership type to "restricted" that should solve the
problem.

Does this mean that Harley will want the identity of Corsairs101, NYPDblue,
Ovatha88, etc, before allowing them to post on the list?

Yes, yes, yes, make it members only.

Okay I need more feedback on this. Most seem to not be too worried about
the occasional piece of spam. But others do care (I have a couple that
mind) so would like more feedback before making a decision.

This is possibly a situation where a poll might actually be justified for a
change. The question is fairly simple isn't it?: "Should this membership
of this group be restricted to people approved by MEPBM games in order to
exclude spammers? y/n"

Or is the question still "Wanna Play Nuaght?" ;-)

The thing is, Clint, if you don't stop them now then the spam will snowball.
The list address will be distributed as "active" within the spamming
community. That's how this scum works.

RD: I can cope with the level of spam on the list at present - I know where the delete key is :-)

Clint, I think you have to weigh up whether you will lose a significant number of new victims, sorry, recruits, or not, if you close the list.

Richard.

How do people currently find out about the list? Apart from our (increasing
number of) spammers, I presume they get the info from Clint one way or the
other. Therefore, making it members only shouldn't cause new recruits or
those genuinely interested in MEPBM any problems.

Spam is an unfortunate side effect of MEPBM going online. Spammers, being
lazy, use automated methods to acquire their mailing lists so will be put
off by the need to, say, fill in a quick form in order to subscribe to the
list. All you would need is "name", "email address", "where did you hear
about MEPBM?". That last question is the one that will act as a filter. Do
NOT use checkboxes; make the person actually enter something. You'll very
quickly see if the request is genuine or not.

You should also have already set the list to reject HTML mail and
attachments, by the way. I suspect you have, but wanted to make sure!
