Well Melian, Queen of Doriath hid Thingol's kingdom
with an enchantment called "The Girdle of Melian."
Too bad those pesky dwarvers killed Thingol for the
Simaril in his own treasury. Not sure why the Girdle
didn't protect Doriath from the Sons of Feanor though.
Also Morgoth cursed Turin Turambar so that he did not
know his sister when wed, causing him to fall on his
sword when the truth was revealed.
I'm sure there are some others, these come to mind.
The first has obvious connection to the Noldo trinket,
the latter no connection to ME that I see.

Obvious one are locate artifact and locate character.
However, I'll keep thinking. :-)

What leaps out at me was Tolien's inclusion of the medieval belief that the
king's hands were healing hands. All part of the king being God's annointed
on earth. Therefor Argleb, etc, would have one or more heal spells.

Gandalf cast the equivalent of a "enduring light"
spell a number of times, particularly under the Misty
Mtns in both the Hobbit and LotR. He cast down burning
pine cones on the wolves in the Hobbit (with mixed
results, as I recall). He did something to Saruman
that broke his staff (though this might qualify on the
level of a 'personal challenge'). There must have
been some "enchant weapon"-type spell used to light up
Sting, Beater and Biter around goblins/orcs.

Something the Dwarves, Elves and Dunedain could do "at
one time" was to 'create artifacts'. Maybe something
new for the games that could be thrown into the mix
for some more fun. :-)

Luthian sang a song that put everyone in Angband to
sleep (negating all guard missions?) and allowed her
and Beren to steal a Silmarel from the iron crown of
Melkor.
Luthian created a disguise so accurate that her and
Beren were able to travel the full length of Middle
Earth without being recognized (of course, the way
MovChar works, it could be said that every character
already had this power ever turn. In MEPBM, the FP
walk in and out of Mordor as if it were a walk to the
corner pub.)
Charm Person was cast on Turin by the dragon (can't
remember the name) freezing him in place. (Giving a
character no orders for a turn.)

Tinuviel had the power to put the hound to sleep, and eating the hearts of dragons increased understanding. Dragons fear touched secret places and seamed to make people blind.

considered latent---all characters of that nation, in the same hex as the
king would return to health through multiple laying on of hands.

Not really sure if it was 'magical' or not, though parts of it certainly
were facilitated by "non-natural" means, but the journey from Bree to
Rivendell was sped by Aragorn. Perhaps a movement spell that lets the
commander of a company move the company further than 12 hexes? (Using
magical means to scry the best path to avoid pitfalls, etc.) After all,
if Pippin had been in charge of that company, it is doubtful they would
have moved as fast. (It is doubtful they would have survived a day.)

Thinking of Rivendel. What about when Gandalf added
the horses to the flood. Illusion.(?) Also, the
flood itself.
And of course, the Healing of Frodo by the elves.
And the 'Morgul Blade' that Frodo was stabed with.

That would be interesting. A spell that makes a minor river hexside
impassible for one turn? Maybe that's too powerful. How about a spell
that makes a minor river hexside cost 10 movement points for one turn,
regardless of a ford?

RD: I LUURVE that one John! However it would have to be subject to strict
limits (eg revolve around base mage rank +/- usual random factor) to avoid
becoming too powerful. Under no circumstances should a new arti come in
with greater power than 30 eg A30, C30 but higher base mage rank increases
the likelihood of hitting 30.
A mage would need to be M40 to stand even the smallest chance of creating a
value 10 arti; M50 to create a value 20 arti; and M60 to create a value 30
arti.
Also there should be a gold cost, say 500 for every point of arti power.
Therefore an A30 arti would cost 15k gold. Expensive, yes, but look at what
you get for your money. I would also say that if the spell fails, the
nation loses the gold anyway.
There could be a partial failure of the spell, so the arti only comes in at
half the desired power (but full cost!).
There should be a small, eg 1/20 chance that if the arti is successfully
created, it also has a random 'hidden' power, which of course would require
a reveal spell to discover.
The order could be:
715 create artifact
Prerequisites:
Mage has sufficient rank
Nation has sufficient gold (obviously there must be gold cost)
Required info: type, eg A10, E30, 2000 combat.
There should also be a small, eg 1/20 chance that if the arti is
successfully created (at full or half desired value) it also has a rabndom
'hidden' power, eg access to teleport or spirit mastery. Of course, a
research spell would be required to discover this!
What if you want to create an arti with access to Lost List spell? Order
720. Well I'm afraid that's going to cost you even more. Only a M60+ could
even attempt such a spell and I would only give him a 50-50 chance at M75.
The 'mundane' value of the arti would be only 10-15 (random roll for CAEM or
weapon). The cost would be, say 20k.
Richard.

RD: ...which was summoned by Elrond. That's one way of getting rid of those
pesky nazgul when they come a-visiting Imladris! But of course, Elrond has
to see them first, and 'hidden' pops like Imladris do not report visitors.
Surely a blatant anomaly like that should be fixed FIRST, before you start
making changes to the spell list!

Mostly just curious. Although I've read (and re-read) most of the Tolkien
books (Unfinished Tales 2 did me in half way through I must admit) I don't
have a grasp for things like this.
Stuff for the future - who knows I'm just curious at present and thought it
interesting in its own right.
