View Full Version : Locating Dragon (#430)

Hi all,
Iīm newbie to this game and after some search I havenīt been able to
find out a a piece of information so I do hope someone over here can
help me:
can I use the spell #430 "Reveal Character True" to find a Dragon?
I think it is possible but the difficulty is increased, if it is so,
any idea of the mage rank necessary to get a fair chance of success?
The idea behind this is to recruit a dragon for the freeps, so any
other sugestion is very welcomed.
Thank you very much for any help.
Ymrian
Ps- I know the dragon might move since it was located (#940) until
next turn when someone arrives (#810), but same happens to DS and so
I am willing to take the chance.

I have seen it work, but rarely.

The only time I've ever seen it work was by an M70+ mage. Not to say
that a lower-ranking would could not succeed,b ut I've never seen it
done.

I've done it a couple of times with a Mage 50(85).
One important thing to notice is that dragons are not recruitable before a
certain turn number (I donīt know wich, but I believe it's turn 4 or 5).
In a GB here in Brazil I've located a dragon on Turn 1, moved there and
located him again, the dragon stayed there for 2 or 3 turns, but I couldn't
get the encounter.

In a gunboat game I tried this tactic with the BS.
Casting the spell is easy enough, but there are 2 checks for
locating a dragon (or any character for that matter)
1. check to see if the spell works. This is determined by spellrank
+ magic items
2. check is against the base-mage rank of the mage. If you fail this
check the description will be something like "Smaug could not be
located"
It seems that the "breaking point" is around 65 mage points. When I
got above 70 in mage rank the spell rarely failed.
I am currently testing a suspicion that the dragon moves when he is
located (just as when you flee from it during an encounter). In my
tests I located 5 dragons, but when I moved a character there it was
gone. This could be bad luck, but I did not have time to see if that
was the case as I had som curse-buisiness to atend to. I could
easily see this "shuffle" effect of the dragons as a deliberate
limitation to limit the DS access to dragons by means of spells.
If my test shows that the dragon moves it is obviously useless to
cast RCT on dragons to recruit them. You could cast RCT on them
to "shuffle them around" in case they did not appear on your
popcentres but that seems a waste of ressources.
But what if the "shuffle" effect was in effect even if the spell
fails?? In my dreams I imagine the free casting RC on every
recruitable dragons every turn to deny the DS any chance of picking
them up :-))

I have had cases where the dragon was located, and still there the
next turn, so I think you simply ran into bad luck with all the
dragons moving.

Even if there was a shuffle effect, they could still seed a lot
of emmies into the Misties and have a pretty good chance of
picking up dragons from time to time.
And they'd be using all their really high-level mages to do it.
Probably a waste of orders better spent tracking artifacts
and agents.

Hi
I have heard of this, but do not know if anyone has tried it.
It has been suggested that you transfer a combat artifact +500 or
something to the dragon when under your employ. When the dragon
flies off after the army is destroyed, certain time passes, ect...
then you do a locate artifact true spell to locate the dragon.
It seams realistic that this could work.
Does anyone of this working?
Thanks,
Steve

I understand the dragons drop the artifacts in a fairly short time.

What about challenging the dragon (and losing) that way the dragon
gains the artifacts.... or do they ?
