Routinely I have force marched "small" cav armies with lots of food and a
high commander rank into Mordor, right past fortifications and defending
armies. You end up in the desert on the other side of the pass. Lots of
poorly defended targets are now available. Enemy does not know the
commander's name and can not scout with agents.
Roughly 15 years ago there was an article in the old "Whispers" on this
subject and MOS conversation seems to have confirmed it in the broad
outlines. Basic odds are your command rank. Add 10 % if "small". Add 10 %
if in rough terrain (cover and concealment is good). Command artifacts do
not help. An army that fails to move evasisvely is subject to overruns and
to overruning even smaller forces. "Army", "large Army" deducts
percentages, but amount disputed.
