Encounter description actually refers to a huge black fiery creature "The Balrog of Moria" holding a flaming whip and a red sword..

The Demon of Aglarond (in/near the White Mountains, which is not a balrog) is the smoky being eating a dead cave troll, is you stand "Still" the critter will not notice you. If it is some other encounter then I am not sure of the correct response.

Ouch! Not one I have come across myself...good luck with it. If you have a more expendable character in the same hex as the character that got the encounter, I would say let the most expendable guy react...
