I'll put my money where my mouth is and start this thread. We'll see if it takes hold or not. I find it is easier in a game to follow the thread when there is only one of them.
Any opinions out there?

Hope it is a good game.
Oh, you wanted opinions?
Ok, It WILL be a good game.
You're probably right that it's easier if there
is only one thread to follow. The first post with
respect to this game was an entry from the DS
so I felt obligated to put in the 2 pence from
the other alliance, but agree that this is much
more efficient.

Hello all !
It appears my brethren, Dog Lord Ben, has a one track mind, something about " bad elves"and "kill elves". That's ok, it keeps

All you newts, we are here to talk turkey with you if you like. Seems MacMan- White Wizard is only one posting so far, and

Just because I am seriously attractive to the ladies and just because I am the BOSS of the Magi and just because I have little altars set up all over the compound dedicated to the "Great and Mighty Sar-rooo-mahn" doesn't mean I have a complex. It just means that it's all true...

Dogs may be smelly at times, but they're also the most loyal of animals. Loyalty is something that the men of Gondor have no clue about since they decided to abandon their holdings east of the Anduin and now make a feeble attempt to get them back by force rather than through diplomacy. As I said, Neutral Lords, the peace-loving orc folk of Mordor shall rid Middle Earth of Gondor's menace, so join our side and help us bring peace to Middle Earth.

Goodie. After they've pooped in the hall and smelled up the kitcken, they sit at the table drooling in your lap. We won't even get into these "orc" things. The Men of Gondor believe every dog has his day and his place. The one called Dendra had his day an age or so ago, and his place will soon be the bottom of this river he so carps about. Courageous and resolute our folk are. Nagging and whining our enemies. Yes, the path is becoming more and more obvious, methinks.
And by the way, there are already lots of peaches along the Anduin. Quite the favourable climate, nice sandy loam, well drained. Many an orchard and vinyards too. Join your fellow Men in exterminating these desert and mountain creatures who defile our borders and threaten our lands.

10th February 2004, 11:29 AM
The Ring is still hidden...
Actually- I should provide a timeline for everybody I guess... I will take my first stab at locating the ring in about 3 turns. Most of the info I have to date is based on rumours, not facts, but it is suggested that the ring isn't in play until later on in the game- some say turn 15 it show sup, others turn 10. This is similar to dragons in that they can't be encountered before a certain period of time has elapsed. (A game balance thing- who can stand up against a dragon on turn 2? Thus the delay- more money for GSI, more chances to survive the monsters when they do show up)
My first LAT will be before these timelines, and I dont expect results from it. I suspect Ill just end up confirming some of the tales that get told... More likely than not, it will turns 10-15 before I get my first useful info back, and it may be later still before I get positive co-ordinates (as most rumours state that you need about 150 mage ranks and big bonuses to the spell to actually pinpoint the thing. That means artis and training for Saruman)
I will make an announcement to the teams when I have made my first stab at the problem... anewsletter I guess.
More to follow!

10th February 2004, 02:14 PM
HEY--- that make me irrelevant! You cant do that! Im the greatest wizard in the game! You're not ALLOWED to do that...
Actually it would be extremly cool to have that kind of co-operation from your team if it could be done. If you could look for the ring, I could study character hunting instead--- part 2 of the search is to see how hard it is to track characters vs tracking the artifact... I was going to ask both sides to name some of thier characters "frodo, bilbo, gollum etc..." to narrow the field of possibilities- I know that some of these names are in use by the game, but Im not sure which... and WHEN they are in use... if gollum can be found turn 1, then does the ring get handed to him later, or is it already there, but not findable?
Many questions. I seriously doubt any one side would be willing to concentrate that much effort into this project though- thus my intent to use WW for the chore...
Anybody interested in actually working towards this end should drop me a line... save me some effort, and allow me to focus on one of the other angles. We all gain by it. Mull it over. How you can manage it though, with a regular war going on, is a mystery to me. I look forward to hearing from you all!

As for the sad circumstances we find ourselves in with this particular rendition of Emily Kills Russ, well, my fine (and likely feathered) DS enemies have taken our Dun quite to task on another thread. I feel much better now, a little light headed, actually.
As for Faramir, well, Rohan has those college pictures of him. Not much I could do. I'll appreciate it if your big scary dude (I won't mention any names) does as I expect him to do and, like Osgiliath and Baranor, I get my way again.

Im not too worried. If the game ends, I'll see if somebody on the winning team is willing to wait it out with me. The others players can sod off and I'll share the info gleaned with the cooperative few. I can't factor in the bloodthirsty bunch with the bullseye stencils. It's irrational- and I can't play with it hanging over my head ya know? Nobody (willing to share the info)has the answers to these questions yet- and most people are curious.
I'll count on the facts that:
(a) most people really do want to know what the truths of the ring are.
(b) the winners will be winning- which means they won't be pressuring me to join them. If they are winning, the dont need me right?
(c) the losers are losing- so they WILL want me on thier side, but since they are loosing, they are unlikely to be in a position to actually waste rescources on attacking me.
I didn't request the WW position to win the game. I've won before. The pin is cute, the badge is nice and the lack of any material gain for all the money spent is spiritually uplifting I suppose... but I am interested in attacking in new and unorthodox styles, in pushing things around in ways I've never done before and in learning things about the game that haven't been in the 'common knowledge' category for years... The one ring is a mystery surrounded by years of guesses, myths, and misinformation. I have the most powerful natural mage in the game, and some artis to boost him a little further. I will find the ring, and I will experiment with fetching it. I will test theories out, put myths to the test and share my data with those players that supported me, or at the very least left me alone. Those that interfere will gain nothing. Those that help will gain insights that will help them to win games in the future.
Here's the simple question- if there are players out there that can't resist the urge to attack me in the future- despite the benefits of my being left alone to do this task- then I BEG them to tell me now. I am not willing to waste the money on this little project if I am going to be stopped a few turns short of the end of it. This game is too expensive (It has cost 61 dollars so far- that's roughly 85 Cdn, which is enough to have a really decent night out on the town!)and I know I can find another group of people who, eventually, will be willing to wait it out.
Speak up now- or keep your swords in thier sheaths until I have the answers. Then you can kill me- with my blessings! Just let me know now. There's still time for a new player with an inclination towards declaring and fighting to come in and join.
Let me know- soon! Within the week if at all possible. If I have to leave this game, I'd rather do it while you guys are all still here- that way Im less likely to run into the irrational bunch, and more likely to play with a more reasonable group.

So, if we are winning, and you find the ring, we are to let you
finish this grand science experiment and toss it into Mt Doom and turn victory into defeat ?
This does not make sense to me - I have been paying the same amount of money per turn as you, as have my mates.

No- Ill be the one to test the theories like:
(1) Is it true that powerful characters that try to hold the ring are "corrupted" and taken out of the game
(2) can weak characters take the ring safely from 'a' to 'b'.
(3) is it easier to locate the ring by finding it's courier rather than finding the ring itself
etc...
If an answer is determined, then I would hand it off to one of your teammates to do with it as you see fit. Or steal it. Can ther one ring ber stolen like any other artifact? Bear in mind the holder must be at mount doom, and issue (2) 990 orders in the same round- no refusing allowed. For security you could always have a curse squad hover around the place and a good challenger on hand to insure that I dont 'snatch victory' away from you.
I would like to confirm the end game message of course, but if we have gone that far, then I am sure you'll share that bit as well.
If you prefer, I can let you send Murazor or some other high powered mage type guy to go and risk 'corruption'. Im good with that. Im also good with you having your small guys try to fetch it. You can carry it back to Mt Doom as best you can, and drop it in. The consequences of such a thing are part of the info gathering process so knock yourself out. I just want the info. Im willing to sacrifice Saruman to see what happens. Ill also sacrifice a dozen other characters to get there. My nation is geared to this. 10 turns in the making! Are you willing to loose your best character(s)in this hunt?
I was under the assumption that you were keen on winning the game and doing well on the points thing. I can allow you to do this, and you get to keep all your nice characters. It's your call. I can also drop out. You don't need me to be here to play, and Im sure you can have fun with my replacement. I know a few guys that are war gamers that would love to provide you with a challenge. I'll find another opportunity Im sure- I just need to know if both sides can handle the thought of a neutral playing a neutral long enough to get the answers to some of the biggest questions that exist in the game. If not, say so, and Ill leave you guys alone. You don't even need me to do this serach- you just need to re-task a bunch of your assets. The DS have the mages, the artis and 10 times the characters that I have... you just have to let up on the freeps long enough to do all this... Another benefit I guess of me doing this- you spend nothing and get everything.
It's your call. I have been playing for a while now. I can dredge up character witnesses I think that will attest to my reputation- I keep my word. I have given it already. I am looking for the ring- and to hell with the game. I won't be trying to pull it out from under anybody else. Im in this for the info, for the rep that comes with being the one that actually did it and the satisfaction of doing something different with a nation that inevitably falls into the same old kind of game that it always does. I'm tired of the 'same old game'. How many times can you win (or loose) before getting bored by it all? I got bored before- dropped out for almost 2 years as a result. Now Im in it for fun. I am not here to ruin your game of course. If you goal is to sack Isengaurd- fine. Loan me a capital and Ill let you take the place. If you want Saruman dead- cool. Take him after Ive found the answers. He's yours too. Just let me in on the secrets of the ring and Im outta there the next turn! Someone on your team already suggested that they could probably do the job, and faster too... haven't done it of course... I guess you're busy with other things?
Let me know, this turn if you can, what you think thew odds are of my being left alone to do this. If they are good, the great. If they are bad, then great. I can have somebody take over this position and be ready to declare in no time flat. You'll be happy, Ill be happier (elsewhere) and I won't begrduge you stringing me along for the last 9-10 turns. After all, you probably figured I was just saying all this to buy some time right? Now you know it's for real- what are your REAL thoughts? Will you abide by the 'truce' or not?

I will now impart a little info on the one ring i have from experience in 2950.
Finding the One Ring is a HUGE pain in the Ass, dont try till
around turn 20 and with a mage of 200+ ability or you will get
shafted. Finding the One ring is one thing and getting it is
another, Bilbo has the ring untill after turn 40, not sure how
long after but at least turn 40, he will move randomly around the
map turn after turn but will occasionaly stop in one hex for two
turns so you will be following him for a while if you are even
lucky enough to keep tracking the ring and moving an agent to the
hexes it was in. This is when you can steal the ring (stole it
with a 47 and 77 agent before) or challenge bilbo but you better
have a damn good challenge. When the Ring is "STOLEN" no other
nation receives a message like when the ring is "FOUND" of this
i have proof.
The possible reason for not being able to curse the carrier is
that the ring provides extra health to the carrier, he is not
limited to the 100 points as normal characters are, not sure what
the health ranking is but is IS above normal.
The ring CAN be transfered to another character as i have done
it.The 77 agent transfered it to Khamul, so maybe a
transfer down in rank is less likey to succeed.
The ring will corrupt high level characters quickly i have heard
of Saruman being corrupted the same turn he received the ring and
he was a 100 Mage at the time. A corrupted character is lost for
the rest of the game.
Lower rank characters can hold on to the ring for shorter periods
of time then Mid level characters my 47 agent only held the ring
for two turns where as the 77 agent held it for 4 turns before
transfering it and Khamul held it for 4 turns before losing it.
When lost the ring will fall in the hex of the character carrying
it or one hex from that spot.
I have heard, though never confirmed, that the one ring can
travel on its own.
Once you lose the ring it seems about 50% harder to locate it or
pick it up, after i lost the ring a 260 mage with a 98% casting
rank on LAT could not find it after 6 tries as well as the 3
other mages with a little less chance of finding it, the
reason we knew where it was is from the end game report.
There it sat as high and low level characters and different
classes attempted to pick up the ring using the 900 order,
probably 10 attempts.
The ring Does afford the bearer 100 stealth, my 77 agent that
showed up everywhere DID NOT show up on two cities with
over 90 loyalty that were friendly towards me. As for the other bonuses it conveys i am not sure, but i do know that the bonuses
DO NOT show up on your character information on your turnsheet.
Moving the one ring is by foot only, spells will make you lose
the ring automatically. Movement over 2 or 3 hexes is possible
but with lower level characters it is not as possible, with the
77 agent i moved 12 then 11 hexes and Khamul then moved 8 hexes
then 6 hexes.
All of these things may change from game to game and probably do
and actions failing and succeeding where the one ring is linked
to the characters involved so all in all it is a crapshoot.
BTW the discription above when referring to tracking the One Ring
was tracking bilbo not the ring specifically but while he had it
we did locate it as with him. I have heard that he loses the ring
in the later stages of the game and that Frodo does indeed have
it at some point but have not personally confirmed this.
The events above took place in two diff games as DS and from turn
37 to turn 57 and turn 39 to turn 50.

I have a question, posted here publically in order to share the answer as such:
If the Wiz does get the ring, loses Saruman, moves it around, etc...is one of your experiments going to be "What happens when a Neutral casts the ring into Mount Doom?"
I think that's the big one on everyone's mind - if/when you get the ring and if you're successful playing around with it (low odds, it would appear...) then what...? I don't think the players want the game to end "for" either side "artificially" by one player fiddling with his own agenda.

Another LONG message sorry!
Deevel- you've been holding out on me! This sounds like a mixture of personally verified info and stuff from the Mouth- Is this ALL confirmed from you personally? It makes a difference- I am not going to try to reinvent the wheel- though I will try to pin down when you can start to locate the couriers- and in a game I lost on turn 28 I had Gollum holding the ring... interesting- we should talk! De-bunking the mouth of sauron back issues is a major goal...
As for a neut dropping it in Mt Doom... I didnt think about that! It is a thought- but I think if I tried, I might hit a flag in the programming and loose the thing. I'll have to talk to the powers that be and see if they'll humour me on this. You never know. THEY may not know what happens either! I know that they seem to be trying to buy the rights to the code for this game- which implies that they don't have all the answers at this point in time. Either way- if the movement thing works as described by Deevel, I won't be able to get it to Mt Doom anyways- not without getting killed by somebody en route... Actually- page 5 of the rule book stipulates that it must be an aligned player that does this- it also MAY imply that a neut is unable to even secure the ring... points to ponder...
I will say this- and hope to be prven wrong...
I think it wil take me a LONG time to find it, let alone get it. Even when I get it (IF I get it) I don't expect to be able to move it and IF I can move it, I may work out something with both sides whereby I move it AWAY form MT Doom just to see how the movement thing works... that way everybody gets to continue the slugfest. The only thing I know for certain about the ring is the ending- therefore I don't need to see it. (would be nice though :) ) I seriously think that this game will end sooner than this of course, thus my aggressive efforts to aquire more artis, and get greater co-operation from both sides. Ill post a second message on 'helpful things that we will all be grateful for later' which will detail some things that volunteers can do at thier leisure (like anybody has time for that! Ha!)
I am not here to ruin a game- as a self described oddball, I am not concerned with this aspect to the game. I would LOVE to play a game where I get to do this without worrying about whether the game is about to end or not. MEPBM won't oblige me on this- so I'll do what I can in this game and hope for the best. The average for getting this position is something like one in 20 games? May be as low as one in 14. I am not waiting THAT long for another attempt at this... that's roughly one year to almost 2 years at the outer end to get the position that I need to do this. Of course if I could play WK, Sinda or Drk Lts, I could do this faster- but the war tends to get in the way. No team can afford to loose these posiitons, and to provide the support needed to help them along thus... WW or bust!
Fingers are crossed that this game (a) lasts long enough for me to find it and work through some recovery theories and (b) that both sides find enough of a 'comfort zone' to help me out in the trivial, but essentially necessary, ways that will maximise my efforts.
Macman- Da Wiz
PS: Geez Don- was that me? SOUNDS like me, but I have played in some fast games and I don't remember playing the blondies in a long time... how far back was this alleged mess conducted? Perhaps it was Chris Hind... a chum and co-conspirator in many of my games? He's played the horsey boys at least 4 times...
Macman
26th April 2004, 03:44 PM
Things that would help find the ring without actually finding the ring:
1- casting 408, 422, 424 on Bilbo and Gollum- more to see when they come into play than anythign else, but a strong mage may get useful info out of 424...
2- casting 412 on the ring. I am interested to see what it will say- if anything. If the ring isnt in play, will it have a different message? "there is no such artifact vs further efforts will succeed? This tells us when the ring comes into play....
3- 436 on bilbo and gollum. obvious benefits to this spell working...
4- 420, 430- see #3 above
ALSO- naming characters "gollum" and "Bilbo". I have already used the names Frodo and Smeagol so these are not NPC names... and on turn 2 I tried to use "Bilbo" and found the name in use already.... I wish I had tried naming GOllum and Bilbo turn 0! Dumb!!!
I am sure you can think of other things to do that wouldnt cost you the game, and that WOULD help the search... these are just off the top of my head.

No, while I have been around a long time (can you say Earthwood?), I found that information on a ME site.

Maybe you should ask Psycho Pirate, he always was a wealth of information. If you could find him.

I can manage almost all of that- but I dont have any 'allies' per se, and while I could loose half my nation in a blink, I wouldnt have anybody to say "Oh Im fine..." too. Drat! You set the bar too high!!!
It's discrimination I tell ya!

Not really. Screwing up comes pretty naturally to me. No work at all.
Like the one time I meant to 610 an ally's last commander but instead 615'd him..... That went over well.
Makes any of the above listed screw ups seem like child's play.
See FP, by me being neutral, I'm actually strengthening your team... Maybe I'll join the DS to help balance the game some. They got Corsairs and Khand, so should have to put up with my screw ups as well.

Wow, Darrel, that's two posts in a row that did not mention "vc points" nor "stockpiling" nor anything else from your "soapbox". Are you now attempting to re-ingratiate yourself with the community or have you simply run out of things to say?

Never, either.
I play the way I play, and I say what I think. If that takes me out of favor, too freakin' bad. I'll never "suck up" or shut up.
Since no one brought up PRS, I felt no obligation to mention it. Now that someone has, I will.
Tell me. If the PRS is good for the game, how can playing for a good score be bad for the game? How can wanting to be the best ranked player I can be, put me in disfavor, unless of course, it is a SUCKY system that rewards SUCKY play?
I'm going to get 2000 VPs for this game, unless the DS and/or FP launch a character attack in the end game. Back in the bad old days of GSI, when the VPs had meaning (like they again do now) I had to do many of those. They were no fun.
Regardless of whether you attack me or not, I've show that playing in a game with someone that is trying to get MAX VPs, is no fun. Since PRS encourages people to play for Max VPs, it is bad for the game.
You anger and name calling have gone a very long way to proving my point. Thanks. The FP silence sure didn't help me. Rat bastards, keeping thier mouths shut...
So, if I to believe half of what I hear, the WK is burning Ranger pops, QA and Corsairs are slicing and dicing SG, while the NG recovers from an early ass kicking, while Khand is rolling the Northmen, the DrgLrd sits secure in Mirkwood, Dog threatens to overrun Rohan and WW is ignoring everyone while looking for the one ring.
Wow, some balance could sure be brought to the game if it weren't for PRS and the way it encourages neutrals to sit on the fence for as long as possible, then jump onto the winning side at the last minute.
Guess I'll be jumping to the DS real soon. I better start recruiting and selling to get the army and gold scores up.

Good, that will mean "if" we win, it will be 9 against 15, and a new legend will be told around the ole Greenwood campfires.
If we lose, we were outnumbered by 6 nations, another good tale will be told around the old Mirkwood campfires.

And here the DS had me convinced the FP consisted of 1 with 9 straddling the fence, you know, the one slowly receding in Mordor...or was that Rohan...or Rhun? I can't keep it all straight. Hmmm. If I joined the Wizard would the DS promise to leave me alone? Maybe these "riders" would consider the same, they seem to claim hardship...

Hi Darrel,
I read a little bit of your note. If there was anything important in it, would you mind paraphrasing it? I have other things to do.

Stewie,
Try order, 175N; Change Allegiance to Neutral.

PS - If you promise to join the WW, the 9 will promise to leave you alone, well, since we have been leaving you alone to win this war....that won't be much of a stretch. Hey, you are still invited to the DOL GULDOR BASH 04, Khamul is providing the beer, so it ain't SAM Gondorian ADAMS...but it isn't all that bad either.

Needless promise as the "9" have left him alone for the entire game.
I will make the FP a promise if you don’t attack FK armies, I will not attack FP armies or pop centers as long as there are unaligned neutrals west of the gap. I don’t even care who wins this game though I don’t think the outcome is in doubt. My goals are west of the Gap.

Ren,
Why go with the term "unaligned neutrals, west of the gap"? Spit it out, do you want to attack the Duns, who stated they may go DS? Or the WW, who is definately north, south, east & west of the gap?

Duns first and foremost though I am assuming he will flip DS if I am ever able to slog through the Gap.
Macman (the WW) is a recent ally whom I DO respect. Played with him in ass-stomping of the FP that was 227, however I dislike neutrals this late in the game even though I understand his desire for research. Don't care to drop this game and don’t care to let it languish for x turns trying to do the ring thing.
Unfortunately for me, the FK has weak characters so not much I can do when the Duns flip DS
I don’t speak for the DS team; I parted ways with them some time back. The DS agenda is to hammer the FP, mine is not. I fear the DS are a very linear thinking group so I am unlikely to get much help in my endeavor.
Really there are only 9 DS plus the neutrals if anyone is keeping score.

Pardon me, but I don't understand this statement. Considering the generally accepted "team" format of the "open" games, wouldn't one who desired to play a solitary game either play another variant or a Neutral. That's what Macman is doing, but an allegiance player? If you care not to discus on an open forum for whatever reason, I'd appreciate some kind of reply so PM would do. I'm not making a morality play, I'm genuinely curious as to your position.
Thanks,
Brad

Madness, simply madness....
This game is the weirdest thing I have seen in a long time. Glad I am part of it! Which actually isnt sarcasm!
