Encounter after dead emmy

Search everywhere - have a good idea about encounters, but unable to find information on their condition after the encounter failed.

I received the "hidden trail" encounter, investigated and got spirits (no list of responses). Emmy died. A second character arrived the same turn the emmy died.
Does second character need the "hidden trail" text?
Will InvEnc or RespEnc work?

Also, in a separate incident, an emmy went to a hex that said there are ruins and was immediately wounded by spirits. This is the fight/gems encounter? Can someone else go fight the spirits now?

I once investigated a surprise encounter with an emissary whilst out creating camps. Emissary died. 3 turns later, we discover it was Elenruth. It took another 8 turns to finally pick up the toy, had a high mage trying both 290 and 900 the same turn 3 turns in a row.

Maybe it was because my guys were of the same nation? Have an ally try? Don't know what my anecdote adds to your query, but I do know it's a pain...

I have several times got a char killed in an artefact encounter (Spirits and or wights), and as far as I can remember it was in all ocasions possible to send in a high challenge 80+ char, and InvEnc, even though the char got no hidden trails encounter.
Many times though, you can see the high challenge char listed in the rumours as having an encounter, even though he or she dident get any.
